Ras Al Khaimah has started work on a multi-billion dollar new city, which will house 200,000 people and have its own mass rapid transport system, according to the daily Emirates Business 24/7.
Rakeen, the real estate development arm of the Ras Al Khaimah Government, has commenced work on the project called Gateway City, which is being developed on the Emirates Road, a person close to the project said.
International consultants are currently working on the master plan, which is estimated to be completed in another six weeks time. An official announcement will be made tomorrow.
According to the initial master plan, the entrance of Gateway City will have a RAK Convention and Exhibition Centre, behind which there will be 10 high-rise towers and residential dwellings including townhouses and villas.
Besides, the city will have schools, hospitals, shopping malls, souqs and entertainment venues.
The development will consist of five phases, extending over 400 million square feet. Phase one will comprise an integrated city to service, support and supplement the capital city of Ras Al Khaimah.
“The grading work has commenced and we estimate the project to be completed in 2012,” the source said.
According to the Rakeen website, the Gateway City will be self-contained and cater to the inhabitants’ every conceivable want and need. Residents will not have to step out of the city for any basic requirements.
“The city will become a substitute and replacement for your accustomed lifestyle. It will not only become your home away from home, but also a place you truly call ‘home sweet home’,” according to the site.
Last month, Rakeen launched Dana Island, its second reclaimed island project after Al Marjan Island, with an aim to transforming the emirate into a full-fledged tourist destination.
Currently, the company is working on projects such as the RAK Financial City, Azure Hotel, Jabel Al Jais and Banyan Tree Resort in the emirate. It is also developing extensive mixed-use projects internationally such as Isfahan in Iran, as well as Tbilisi Uptown and Tbilisi Heights in Georgia.
